Monday-

Topics:  Review Ch. 3 material

Activities:  Students will participate in basketball test review game.  Winning team will receive +5 bonus points on their test.

Tuesday-

Activities:  Ch. 3 Test-  Budgeting

Wednesday-

Topics:  Test results; objectives for next section (Debt)

Activities:  Students will define the vocabulary for Ch. 4 on a sheet of paper using online book.

Thursday-

Topics:  Debt:  Product, Not privilege

Activities:  Discuss Learning Outcomes for Section 1.  Complete Measure your progress (Before). Watch Video 1.1.  Students to take notes and answer journal question.  Discuss video.  The read and discuss “The Devastating Effects of Credit.”  Watch Video 1.2.  Students to take notes and answer journal question

Friday-

Topics:  Debt:  Product, Not privilege

Activities:  Go back through fill-ins for 2nd video for section 1.  Discuss video content.  Refer students to sidebar on p. 78.  Discuss.  Pull up and show national debt clock on foundationsu.com/clock and discussed national debt, elections, etc.  Students will then pick a partner and complete “Hidden Costs of Credit” activity. Discuss if time allows.

 

Lesson Plans for October 5-9, 2015

Monday-

Topics:  Zero-Based budgets

Activities:  Students will receive “The Student budget” activity sheets.  We will go through scenario one and create a zero based budget for Marcus together as a class.  We will then go through how to calculate income for second scenario (Jenna) since it involves overtime pay.  Students will then be responsible for finishing the budget for Jenna as well as create a zero-based budget for themselves using their complete cash flow plans.  If don not finish in class, for homework.  Due by the first of class Tuesday.

Tuesday-

Topics:  Zero-based budgets

Activities:  Zero-based budgets due.  Will go through budget for Jenna.  Class will then be divided into groups of 4-6.  These groups will represent families of different makeups.  Each group will draw for their personal makeup.  Students will then choose a family name and names for family members.  Each group will record this information on the Student Activity Sheet.  Next, each group will draw for their annual income.  Students will need to divide this income by 12 (to determine their monthly income for budget purposes) then multiply that figure by .80 to get their monthly income after taxes.  After income is determined, each group will work together to create a zero-based budget based on the needs of their assigned family.  MUST include the basics for shelter, utilities, food, transportation, and clothing.  Also need to contribute some to savings to build an emergency fund.  All left-over money can be divided according to their family’s needs.

Wednesday-

Early release day–  Class will be given the opportunity to work on any assignments that they are behind on.

Thursday-

Topics: Review of Ch. 3 material

Activities:  Students are to complete the Ch. 3 Summary and Money in Review using their notes and their online book.  If don’t finish in class, for homework.  Due by the first of class Friday.

Friday-

Topics:  Reinforcement of Ch. 3 material

Activities:  students will be broken up into groups and given a scenario to read and discuss.  They must come up with, as a group, some possible solutions to the presented problems as well as answer any other questions that were given in scenario.  Students will then present their scenario and solutions to the class.  Afterwards, students will be directed to foundationsU.com.  They will need to click on the High School link and go to FPP Radio Calls.  They will then need to choose one radio call to listen to.  On a sheet of paper, they will need to write which radio call topic they chose, summarize the caller’s question/situation, and Dave Ramsey’s advice to them.  Due by the end of class.

Lesson Plans for September 28-October 2, 2015

Monday-

Topics:  Ch. 2 Test results; reinforcement of chapter material if needed; become familiar with vocabulary for next chapter

Activities:  Go over any questions/ problems on test.  All students will correct their tests by writing on notebook paper the question missed and correct answer and turn back in.  Any student who failed test, will be assigned unit in Odysseyware. Must complete unit before can attempt test retake.  Note:  Student may only retake test once if failed and the highest score they can make is a 70.  After corrections, students will then define the vocabulary for Ch. 3 on a sheet of notebook paper using book in Google drive (p. 50).  Turn in to box when complete.

Tuesday

Topics:  Budgeting 101

Activities:  Go through learning outcomes for Ch. 3.  Students will complete the “Before”  section on Measure your progress.  Students will watch video 1.1, fill in blanks on notes, then be prepared to discuss the video content.  Sample cash flow plans will be shown and discussed.  Students will then watch video 1.2 and be prepared to discuss.  Students will receive activity “How to manage your checking account.”  Will discuss parts of a check, how to fill out, and how to keep a check register.  Students will then have to complete a check register using sample transactions.  Due Wednesday fist of class if don’t finish during class time.  Students will then be assigned the following homework:  they will have to keep a listing (by day) of all of their money coming in or out. (This can include money that your parents spend on you).  Must write date, who going to or receiving from, what for, and amount.  Will be due Monday of next week (Oct. 5).

Wednesday-

Topics:  Basics of Banking

Activities:  “How to manage your checking account” activity due.  Students will then watch Video 2.1 and be prepared to discuss the video content.  Next, we will discuss how to reconcile a bank statement with the check register with activity “Balancing your checking account.”  Students will then be given a copy of graphic organizer in which they will have to use to identify and describe the four types of expenses using p. 60 of student book.  Graphic organizer will be due Thursday by the first of class for a daily grade.

Thursday-Friday

Topics:  The importance of having a zero-based budget

Activities:  Graphic organizer due.  Students will watch video 3.1 and be prepared to discuss the video content.  Refer students to “How do you budget with irregular income?”  article on p. 63 of book.  Discuss.  Students will then watch video 3.2 and be prepared to discuss content.  Students will fill in journal question for video 3.2 on their notes.  Go over any blanks missed on notes as well as several discussion questions.

Monday-

Topics:  The Power of Compound Interest

Activities:  Students will watch Video 3.1 then be prepared to discuss the video content.  Will go over graph on p. 43 and discuss interpretations.  Students will then complete the “Saving:  A way to build wealth” activity using the foundationsU.com website.  Go to the investing calculator under “tools”.  Then use the investing calculator to complete the scenarios on the provided worksheet.  If don’t finish in class, for homework.

Tuesday-

Topics:  Review knowledge of Ch. 2 material

Activities:  Students to complete the Ch. 2 summary sheets using their notes and online book.  If review not finished during class, will be for homework and due by the first of class Wednesday.

Wednesday-

Topics:  Review knowledge of Ch. 2 material

Activities:  Ch. 2 review sheets due.  Students will then participate in review game over Ch. 2 material (Saving).  Then review sheets will be passed out and discussed.  Test tomorrow over Ch. 2.

Thursday-

Topics:  Saving:  An exercise in character

Activities:  Video 1.1, note fill-ins, and journal question; class discussion; Students to be divided into groups.  They will be instructed to read passage “Are Americans Good Savers?”  They are to discuss and answer the following questions in their groups and be ready to share with the class:  1. Explain what is wrong in this cause/effect relationship in Americans’ money saving behavior.  2.  What should be the cause of one’s money saving habits?  3.  How is it that Americans are able to save a larger percentage of their income when the economy is weak, unemployment is high, and incomes are generally lower?

Wednesday-

Topics:  Three Basic Reasons to Save Money

Activities:  Video 2.1, note fill-ins, and journal question; class discussion;  Students to then complete the “Savings by Nation” questions using calculator and Internet;  students to share findings with the class.

Thursday-

Topics:  Three Basic Reasons to Save Money (c0nt.)

Activities:  Videos 2.2 and 2.3 and note fill-ins.  Class discussion.  Students to then complete the “Sinking Fund Savings” activity.

Friday-

Topics:  Review “Reasons to Save Money”

Activities:  Discuss “Sinking Fund Savings” activity.  Will go thru how to figure out a monthly amount to put into a sinking fund for items, events, etc.  Students will then answer the 3 questions over sinking funds and be prepared to discuss their answers with the class.  Turn in when discussion complete for a daily grade.

Activities:  Video, notes, and discussion over new material.  Students will then begin “The History of American Credit” questions using their online textbook and the Internet.

Tuesday-

Activities:  Students to continue working on “The History of American Credit” using their online textbook and Internet.

Wednesday-

Homework due (The History of credit in America).

Objective:  Ch. 1 Section 3:  You and Money

Activities:  Video 3.1 and notes.  Students to log onto foundationsu.com and take the Money personality quiz.  Students to then use online text to complete the “What is personal finance” worksheets.

Thursday-

Objective:  Review section 3 topics

Activities:  Discuss the questions from “What is personal finance” worksheet;  Pass out and discuss the “Take Action Challenge”;  students are to then complete and turn in for a daily grade.

Friday-

Objective:  Reinforce Ch. 1 topics

Activities:  Students will be broken into groups to read and discuss assigned case study.  They are to come up with solution(s) to the problems presented in the case and be prepared to share with the rest of the class.  Next, they are to complete the Ch. 1 Summary worksheets using their notes and online text.  If don’t finish in class, for homework.  Due by the first of class Tuesday.

About Money Matters; Getting to know you activities

Tuesday-

Discuss class procedures, acceptable use policies, school supplies, subscribe to blog, Google drive, etc.

Homework:  Get classroom procedures signed by parent and parent subscribed to Money Matters blog by Friday, August 28 (Daily grade). Also, need to try and have school supplies by Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Wednesday-

Topics:  Accessing Money matters textbook through Google drive

Activities:  Students will test their Google drive userids/passwords if they would not work yesterday.  Students will then share their email addresses with Mrs. Ross who will share the Money Matters textbook with them through their Google drive.

Thursday-

Topics: Accessing the Money Matters textbook; getting familiar with Ch. 1 vocabulary

Activities:  Students will pull up Money Matters textbook on classroom computers, then define the vocabulary for Ch. 1 on a sheet of notebook paper.

Friday-

Homework due:  receipt of class procedures signed by parents and subscribed to Money Matters blog

Welcome to Money Matters!  This course will enhance students’ financial literacy skills and enable them to develop informed money management strategies.  Topics covered:  saving and budgeting; credit and debt; financial planning and insurance; income, taxes, and giving.

Discussion questions.   Students will then identify 2 long-term financial goals and answer the following questions about each: 1.  Am I willing to make the financial sacrifices necessary to meet this goal?  2.  If I don’t accomplish this goal, what are the consequences?  3.  How much money do I need to accomplish this goal and when will I need it?

Thursday-

Topics:  Investing 101 (cont)

Activities:  Students to watch video 1.2/ Notes fill-ins and journal question. Discussion questions. Students will then set up their “Individual Fund Tracker”.

**Note:  All students will need to bring your headphones to class tomorrow**

Friday-

Topics:  Types of Investments

Activities:  Students to watch video 21.1/ Notes fill-ins and journal question. Discussion questions.  Students will then listen to one of the radio call ins from “Live from Financial Peace Plaza”  then write a brief summary.  Will need to be prepared to share their summary of the phone call with the class.
