Activities: Students to complete the “Drive Free” activity using the Internet and a calculator.
Wednesday-
Topics: Buying a House
Activities: Students to watch video 2.4 and mark fill-ins on notes. Discussion questions: 1. Wise decisions you should make when buying a house? Refer to graph on p. 85 (15 or 30- year mortgage) 2. Fixed versus variable rate mortgages? Refer to sidebar on p. 86 (Mortgages to avoid) 3. Why are reverse mortgages a bad idea? Activity: search for a home to buy. Students will then use a calculator and/or mortgage calculator to determine the following: 10 % down payment 2. Payments on the home if get a 15 year fixed rate loan at specified interest rate 3. What take home pay would I need to make in order to keep the house payment at or below 25% of take home pay.
Thursday-
Topics: Credit cards
Activities: Students to watch video 2.5 and mark fill-ins on notes and answer journal question. Discussion questions: 1. Why are teens such a huge target for credit card companies? 2. Studies show that people spend 12-18% more when using credit cards. Why is that? Activity: Students are to find three credit advertisements (Ex. car loans, credit cards, title pawn, etc.). Students are to print advertisements then write three statements for each ad that ether refute a claim or point out a negative reality of the debt product that the ad fails to reveal.
Friday-
Topics: Debt vs. Wealth-Building
Activities: Students to watch video 2.6 and mark fill-ins on notes then answer the journal question. Discussion questions: 1. What is your largest wealth-building tool? 2. List the steps to get out of debt. Refer students to sidebar on p. 89 about serious consequences of not repaying debt. Read and discuss. Refer students to article “What about credit card rewards?” on p. 88 in textbook. Read and discuss. 3. What is the debt snowball? How does it work? Activity: The Debt Snowball.
