Monday-

Topics:  Life After High School-  Beware and be Wise

Activities:  Discuss learning objectives for section 1; students will complete the “Measure your progress” for Ch. 5; Watch Video 1.1 and fill in blanks for notes; Discussion Questions:  1.  What are some ways in which you can invest in yourself?  2.  In what ways can you do a better job of investing in yourself now?  Refer to p. 105 “This debt has ruined…”  Will read together and discuss.  Then watch video 1.2 and fill in blanks for notes;  Discussion Questions:  1.  Review:  What are the first 3 foundations?  4th foundation is “Pay Cash for College”.  2.  What is the student loan myth?  Refer to p. 107 “A message from Dave.”  Read and discuss.

Tuesday-

Topics:  Exploring the FAFSA website

Activities:  Students will explore the FAFSA website and answer the questions on the “Navigating the FAFSA website” worksheet.  If don’t finish in class, for homework.  Be prepared to discuss your answers with the class.

Wednesday-

Topics:  Results from exploring the FAFSA website activity; Ch. 5 Section 2-  Start with the end  in mind

Activities:  Class discussion of results from exploring the FAFSA website activity;  Watch Video 2.1 and fill-in notes;  Discussion Questions:  1.  What are some excuses people make for taking out student loans?  2.  What percentage of student loan borrowers had difficulty repaying their student loan?  Refer to p. 110 “I regret going to college when and how I did.”  Read and discuss

Thursday-

Topics:  Cash Flow your college education

Activities:  Video 3.1.  Students to fill in notes and answer journal question.  Discussion Questions:  1.  What does it mean to Cash-flow your education?  2.  What are things that you can and should be doing right now in order to cash-flow your post-high school education?  Students will then complete the “Looking at college or vocational school expenses” activity using the Internet.

Friday-

Topics:  Cash Flow your college education (cont.)

Activities: Video 3.2.  Students to fill in notes and answer journal question.  Discussion Questions:  1. Why is it important to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student aid) even though you are not going to take out student loans?  2.  What are grants?  Refer to sidebar titled “Is there a scholarship out there for me?”  Discuss.  Refer to “Where to Find Scholarships”  paragraph.  Discuss.  Students will the complete the “Researching Scholarships” activity.  Homework will be for students to ask their parent(s0 about any scholarships that student mat be eligible for thru their parent’s work.  Due by the first of class Monday.

Topic:  Chapter review over Debt

Activities:  Students will participate in a review game to go over topics for test.  Winning team will receive 5 bonus points towards their test grade.

Tuesday-

Activities:  Test over Chapter 4- Debt

Wednesday-

Topics:  Ch. 4 Test results

Activities:  Go over Ch. 4 Test; students to make corrections to missed questions and turn back in by end of class.

Thursday-

Topics:  Discuss objectives for Ch. 5 (Life after high school); students to then become familiar with Ch. 5 vocabulary

Activities:  Students to define the vocabulary for Ch. 5 using their book in Google drive.  Due by the end of class for a daily grade.

Friday-

Topics:  The Credit Score

Activities:  Students to watch video 3.1 and fill in notes and journal questions.  Discussion Questions:  1.  What does FICO stand for?  Refer to chart on p. 90 (5 components)  2.  What are the 5 components of the FICO score? 3.  Can you really live without a credit score?  Activity:  Students to get online and answer the following questions on their own:  1.  Explain what the 5 components of the FICO score mean (Describe)  2.  Range of possible FICO scores  3.  Levels marking bad credit, good credit, etc.  4.  How is manual underwriting an alternative to having to obtain a mortgage with a FICO score?

Tuesday

Topics:  Credit Bureaus and Identity Theft

Activities:  Students to watch video 4.1 and fill in notes and journal question.  Discussion Questions:  1.  What is a credit bureau?  2.  Typical client of credit bureaus?  3.  How longs does info stay on your credit report?  4.  What are the three main credit bureaus?  5.  How often should you check your credit report for errors?  6.  What issues was the Fair credit Reporting Act intended to address?  7.  Discuss the Fair debt collection practices act.  Identity Theft:  1.  Fastest growing white-collar crime in N. America?  2.  What are some warning signs that you may have had your identity stolen?  3.  What should you do if you think your are a victim?  4. Topics to protect yourself from identity theft?  5.  What should a strong password include?  Students are to then get onto Foundationsu.com and select and listen to an Ask Dave radio call.  Will need to summarize caller’s situation, including financial information needed to make a decision, followed by the advice that Dave gave the caller.  Turn in for a daily grade.

Wednesday-

Early release-  afternoon class will not meet today.  Morning class will have time to finish summarizing the radio call from yesterday if did not finish in class.

Thursday-

Topics:  Chapter review over Debt

Activities:  Students to use their notes and book from Google drive to complete the chapter review questions.  If don’t finish in class, for homework.  Due by the first of class Friday.

Friday-

Topics:  Chapter review over Debt

Activities:  Chapter review questions due.  Students will then participate in a review game to go over topics for test.  Winning team will receive 5 bonus points towards their test grade.

Monday-Tuesday

Bring something to work on or read.  We will not start new section until Wednesday when band members return from state competition.

Wednesday-

Topics:  Credit cards

Activities:  Students to watch video 2.5 and mark fill-ins on notes and answer journal question.  Discussion questions:  1.  Why are teens such a huge target for credit card companies?  2.  Studies show that people spend 12-18% more when using credit cards.  Why is that?  Activity:  Students are to find three credit advertisements (Ex.  car loans, credit cards, title pawn, etc.).  Students are to print advertisements then write three statements for each ad that either refute a claim or point out a negative reality of the debt product that the ad fails to reveal.

Thursday-

Topics:  Debt vs. Wealth-Building

Activities:  Students to watch video 2.6 and mark fill-ins on notes then answer the journal question.  Discussion question:  1.  What is you largest wealth-building tool?  2.  List the steps to get out of debt.  Refer students to sidebar on p. 89 about serious consequences of not repaying debt.  Read and discuss.  Refer students to article “What about credit card rewards?”  on p. 88 in textbook.  Read and discuss. 3.  What is the debt snowball?  How does it work?  Activity:  The Debt Snowball.

Friday

Topics:  Debt vs. wealth building

Activities:  Students will get back into groups from yesterday and finish the Debt Snowball activity.  Will come together and discuss when finished.
